William Forsythe: Three Atmospheric Studies
Installation for The Forsythe Company, Frankfurt, Germany
Fluorescent lamps, fixtures, filters
2005

Invited to design the lighting for choreographer William Forsythe's Three Atmospheric Studies, Finch produced a different set of lamps for each of the three acts of the performance. The first act’s lighting composition responds to the dark, brooding clouds of Lucas Cranach the Elder's 1503 Crucifixion, which was Forsythe's original inspiration for the dance. The second chromatic arrangement is based on a series of paintings by J. M. W. Turner. The third composition is based on bright daylight; Finch broke down the white sunlight in his studio into Isaac Newton's color spectrum.
