The installation uses hanging light fixtures to represent the molecules of a pigment mix (4 different pigments) that matches the color of the night sky over the Painted Desert. These molecules are iron oxide (Mars Black), Manganese Violet, Cobalt Blue, and Titanium White. Each lamp within a molecule represents a single atom.
