This work represents the song patterns of ten individual humpback whales in The Philippines, Japan, and Hawaii recorded during 2006. Whale researchers have developed a color-coded system that tracks song phrases sung by humpback whale populations globally. The filter colors in the work are adapted from that system and refer to phrases of the whale songs that are repeated in different sequences depending on the individual whale, the pod to which it belongs, and its geographic location.
